Art Contest

The MHEA annual art contest/exhibition for homeschool students will take place on Friday, August 12, at Great Oaks Church of Christ in Bartlett, at 3355 Brunswick Road. The contest is open to grades K-12, as well as a category for special learners. Art should be dropped off the morning of the contest from 9:30 - 11:30 am. By popular request, from 1:45-2:00 pm, everyone may view the art entries and no art may be picked up until after 2:00 pm. All art and ribbons must be picked up that afternoon between 2:00 - 3:00 pm. Parents, please make sure your children do not touch any of the art exhibited! No one may be present during judging. Judges' decisions are final. This contest is a preliminary to the School Art competition of the Delta Fair. The top two winning projects from each grade will be eligible for entry into the Delta Fair at the discretion of the judges. Entries displayed at the Delta Fair may be picked up at the MHEA office beginning Wednesday, September 14, during regular office hours. For further information, please contact Melanie Smith at ArtContest@MemphisHomeschool.org or telephone the MHEA office at 901-753-4705.

Art Contest Rules

Please read VERY CAREFULLY as there are a number of changes this year. The Mid-South Fair has now re-located, so we will be putting our art into the Delta Fair and Music Festival located near the Agricenter. The Delta Fair gives cash prizes to the top six places in each grade level as well as a substantial Best of Show Award. Unfortunately, at this time, there are no categories in the School Art division for 3-D art (sculptures, pottery, etc.) or photography. Please make suggestions to Jan Hamilton (901-487-3075) at the Delta Fair if you would like these categories included in future years. She seems very open to accommodating our requests.

Origin -- All entries must be the original works of the students. Artwork must have been completed since September 1, 2010.

Theme -- Any theme is acceptable but must be viewable in accordance with family values.

Mounting -- All paintings and drawings must be securely mounted on poster board or matted. Matting/poster board cannot extend beyond three inches from the original art. No frames allowed. (This also means NO stretched canvases are allowed.) Maximum size of the artwork, including the poster board/mat, is 18 inches by 24 inches. No 3-D art will be accepted.

Identification -- On the back of each entry in the upper right corner, record the student's name, grade, and Memphis Home Education Association, making sure it does not show through to the front. Grade level can be the student's grade for the 2010-2011 year. Each student may only enter in one grade level.

Entry Fee -- Entry fees are now included in your MHEA annual membership so there is no fee per entry. You must be an MHEA member to participate. Awards will be presented to all participants. Maximum of two entries per student. MHEA can enter a maximum of two pieces per grade (but only 1 entry per student) in the Delta Fair. The entries will be determined at the discretion of the judges. Local homeschoolers can enter this type of artwork in the Delta Fair only through a homeschool association.
